The Maurizio Caldirola Arte Contemporanea gallery is pleased to present the first solo show in Italy by Markus Linnenbrink, a German artist living in Brooklyn, N.Y.

His work is characterised by its experimentation with a new creative process linked to abstraction. An abstraction derived from a patient and methodical physical process that allows the paint to freely flow down aided by precious wooden stretchers; the result is a subtle field and the stratification of many dripped lines. Furthermore, the recent works often show a basic way of working that is informal or even derived from reproduced photographs over which are superimposed less dense fields that cover and reveal images dear to the artist from the family photo archive. The layering of colours can lso be found in the “Drills” series where the drips are no longer the creative action of the work but, instead, are replaced by veils of resinous material that are successively carved with a router to liberate an explosion of colours and geometries with an innovative visual impact.

With this show, THEREAINTNOEASYWAYOUT, the artist pays tribute to the MCAC with one of his most incisive interventions, a wall painting, where the gallery is completely covered with colours flanked side by side, thus transforming the spatial concept. This project leaves the viewers with no way of escape, and they are immersed in the psychedelia of a specifically created space, one where the perception of it is magically upended by the artist’s “antiarchitectural” geometry. He brings to mind many German masters of abstraction, even though his work is flooded with colour. In his Pop Art colour there is also the clear influence of such Minimal artists as Sol LeWitt, Dan Flavin, John McCracken, and even Donald Judd.
